2008 Women's Studies Spring Luncheon

The Women's Studies Spring Luncheon held on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 was attended by Women's Studies faculty, award recipients, and supporters of the program.  Following a buffet lunch, Heartease performed three songs illustrating women's voices from Germany, circa 1570.

Members of the Women's Studies Program Review Committee presented faculty and graduate awards.  Faculty recognized were Dr. Claire Katz, winner of the WMST Curriculum Diversity Grant, and Dr. Ashley Currier, winner of the WMST/Glasscock Center Stipendiary Faculty Fellowship.  Graduate research fellowships on topics relevant to women's studies were awarded for master's thesis research to runner-up Christina Ashie and winner Delilah Besa and for doctoral research to runner-up Courtney Beggs and winner Leslie Gautreaux-Edwards.

This year two outstanding undergraduate essays on women were recognized with the Henry E. Jameson Prize.  Mingde Mark Chia was named runner-up for his essay "Navigating Difference in the Wide Sargasso Sea."  Brittany Autumn Swihart was named winner for her essay "Shakespeare and the Father-Daughter Relationship - A Case Study of Portia in The Merchant of Venice."

Recognition during the luncheon included graduate student travel grant recipients Delilah Besa, Heather Caldwell, Richa Dhanju, Leslie Gautreaux-Edwards, Miranda Green-Barteet, Soo Kim, Jocelyn Lewis, Nicole McDaniel, Jacqueline McDowell, Masha Sukovic, Elizabeth Talafuse, and Shari Valentine.  Students who received their WMST Graduate Certificates were Christina Cedillo, Sara Day, Soo Kim, Donna Mancuso, Julie McCormick, Margie Serrato, Masha Sukovic, Beverly Van Note, Kristen Vogel, and Hana Waisserova.
