FELLOWSHIPS AND GRANTS 2006-2007

During Fall Semester 2006, the Women's Studies Program was pleased to support students whose research and scholarly activities expanded our knowledge of women and gender issues. Also, the Women's Studies Program collaborated with university departments and programs by co-sponsoring women/gender-related scholarly activities. Listed below are individuals and programs supported by the Women's Studies Program.

Undergraduate:

Jameson Prize winner

Capri Fisher is the 2007 recipient of the $250 Jameson Prize for her undergraduate paper entitled, "The Changing Face of Motherhood: How Women's Lifestyle Magazine Advertising Depicts American Mothers of the Past and Present"

Graduate:

Women's Studies Dissertation/ Thesis Fellowships

Susan Dummer, Department of Communication, was awarded a Dissertation/Thesis  Fellowship for her dissertation project entitled "The Identity Formation of Preadolescent Girls and Their Conceptualization of Girlhood."

Amy Montz, Department of English,  was awarded a Dissertation/ Thesis Fellowship for her dissertation project " Dressing for England: Fashion and Nationalism in Victorian Novels."

Margarita Tartakovsky, Department of Psychology, was awarded a Dissertation/Thesis Fellowship for "Disordered Eating among Jewish American Women:  Exploring Religion's Role."

Travel Grants

Ryan Caldwell, Department of Sociology, was awarded a grant for travel to the National Women's Studies Association meeting to be held in June 2006. Paper title: "Sugar and Spice, Everything Nice?"

Lei-Shih Chen, Department of Health Education, received a grant for travel to the meeting of the Society of Public Health Education held in December, 2005.  Paper title: " Research on Reproductive Genetic Testing Attitudes and Behavior;  Where Is the Theory?"

Yi-Hsuan Chen, Department of Educational Administration, was awarded a grant for travel to the Interdisciplinary Qualitative Studies Conference held in January, 2006. Paper title: "Female Principals in Communication; A Case Study of Strategies and Skills, Contributions and Conflicts."

Leslie Gautreaux-Edwards, Department of English, received a grant for travel to the Modernist Studies Association meeting held in November, 2005.  Paper title: "Lily and Gerty:  Wharton's Single Women and the Modern City."

Soo Kim, Department of English, was awarded a grant for travel to the British Women Writers Conference held in March, 2006.  Paper title:  "John Has Two Wives:  Romantic Friendship and Gender Switching in Dinah Maria Mulock's John Halifax, Gentleman."

Sarah Peters, Department of English, received a grant for travel to the May 2006 meeting of the American Literature Association.  Paper title: "'The Division of Ways': Rejection of Inheritance in Anne Sexton's Familial Elegies."

Michael Stellefson, Department of Health and Kinesiology, was awarded a grant for travel to the 2006 meeting of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.  Paper titles: "Indoor Tanning Behavior among Adolescent Females" and " Body Image Satisfaction and Sports Supplement Use among College Female Athletes."

Faculty:

Women’s Studies Faculty Curriculum Diversity Grants:

  • Dr. Kimberly Brown, Department of English, for "Contemporary Black Feminist Thought."
  • Dr. Kazuko Suzuki, Department of Sociology, for "Gender in Asia."

Glasscock/WMST Stipendiary Faculty Fellowship:

  • Dr. Sara Alpern, Department of History, for "Before the Glass Ceiling: Early Twentieth Century U.S. Businesswomen."

Women's Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Research Award:

  • Dr. Cynthia Werner, Department of Anthropology, for a collaborative project with a member of the geography department at Macalester College entitled "Returning Home: Gender, Migration and the Kazakh Diaspora in Mongolia."

Certificates of Appreciation for meritorious service to the Women's Studies Program:
