The Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies at Texas A&M offers the Master’s or Doctoral student the benefits of gaining an interdisciplinary graduate concentration in gender-related subjects, while at the same time earning a degree in a disciplinary major field. The Women’s Studies Certificate provides the opportunity to develop a thorough grounding in the new scholarship on women and gender, encouraging the development of applications and interconnections to the major field of study. The certificate program aims to enhance the critical thinking and methodological skills of the student, while facilitating the analysis and evaluation of theories about the role of gender in culture, society, and the arts. The program also emphasizes the intersection of gender with other social bases of difference, including race, ethnicity, class, age, and nationality. The graduate certificate program brings the advantages of interdisciplinary approaches to research, and provides opportunities and resources for innovative scholarship.
Women’s Studies critically explores the roles and status of women and men, past and present, and in various cultures. It also attempts to recover the "lost" or neglected accomplishments of women in literature, the arts, the sciences, and other fields. A focus on women’s experience can often lead to critical insights about culture, society, and the world. Women’s Studies challenges many of the common assumptions of traditional academic disciplines, forcing a re-examination of issues and presuppositions, and developing new and fresh perspectives on old questions. Thus, the student who combines a traditional disciplinary degree with a certificate in Women’s Studies becomes better prepared to develop new insights, to ask new questions, and to creatively contribute to the development of knowledge.
Increasingly, students with a background in Women’s Studies are in demand in employment in traditional academic settings as well as in law, business, social services, and education. At Texas A&M, graduate faculty from a variety of departments, mainly within the College of Liberal Arts, are active in teaching courses offered within the Certificate Program. It is recommended, though not required, that the student’s Graduate Advisory Committee should include one of the Women’s Studies teaching faculty as a member.
Information about the Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate Program is available from any Graduate Advisor in the College of Liberal Arts, or from the Director of Women’s Studies.
