Course List

Women's Studies is interdisciplinary; it offers a wide variety of courses from various departments both at the graduate and at the undergraduate level. All these courses emphasize issues related to women across cultures. The wide array of courses from a variety of departments means that Women's Studies can readily be tailored to serve students' individual needs and interests.

                                  UNDERGRADUATE COURSES

Course Requirements for the Minor in Women's Studies
Students must successfully complete 18 credit hours, including at least 9 hours at the upper-division (300 and 400) level, as follows:

WMST 200 - Introduction to Women's Studies
WMST 481 - Senior Seminar
3 hours WMST humanities courses
3 hours WMST social sciences courses
6 hours WMST electives as approved by the Director of Women's Studies

Core Courses in Women's Studies
Introduction to Women's Studies (WMST 200 – 3 credit hours): Historical and cross-cultural perspectives on women's roles in culture, the workplace, the family and other sociopolitical institutions; the social construction of gender, sexuality and racism; social control mechanisms and ideologies.

Research (WMST 291 – 1 to 3 credit hours): Research conducted under the direction of faculty member in women’s studies. May be repeated 3 times for credit. Prerequisites: 3 credits in WMST; freshman or sophomore classification and approval of instructor.

Studies in Gender and Diversity (WMST 391 – 3 credit hours): Exploration of a significant topic in gender studies, emphasizing the interplay of gender with one or more races, ethnicities, and/or cultures beyond the Anglo-American. Topics may vary depending on the instructor.

Feminist Theory (WMST 401 – 3 credit hours): Inquiry-based examination of feminist theory from various periods and disciplinary perspectives, with application to societal debates and controversies. Prerequisites: WMST 200 or approval of instructor; junior or senior classification.
 

Senior Seminar in Women's Studies (WMST 481 - 3 credit hours): Inquiry-based investigation of an issue, problem, or question, using gender or feminism as the organizing principle for analysis; methods and materials of scholarship in the field; includes opportunities for student research. Prerequisite: Senior classification or approval of instructor. (Usually only offered in the Spring semester.)

Research (WMST 491 – 1 to 4 credit hours): Research conducted under the direction of faculty member in women’s studies. May be repeated 3 times for credit. Prerequisites: 12 credits in WMST including 6 at 300-level; junior or senior classification and approval of instructor.

Special Topics (WMST 489)
Special topics courses are offered each semester in a variety of departments. In the recent past, these have included Women in Music, Language and Gender, Images of Women, and many others. Some of these count as Social Science courses and others as Humanities. Check our schedules for current listings.

New topics are frequently added and special topics courses (WMST 489) are offered almost every semester. Students interested in current course offerings should consult the Programs Office, the University Schedule of Classes, or the Women’s Studies website.
