Areas of Interest:
· Dr. Vaid has published extensively in psycholinguistic and neurocognitive perspectives on bilingualism and word recognition in users of different writing systems. She directs the Language and Cognition laboratory at Texas A&M. Her other research interests include figurative language processing, language and gender, and South Asian diasporic women’s groups.
Dr. Vaid has taught courses in the Psychology of Language, Research Methods, Cognitive Psychology, Introduction to International Studies, The Bilingual Mind, and Special Topics in Language and Gender, and is convenor of the Cognoscenti Working Group seminar series.
· Her publications on gender include a co-edited monograph, South Asian Women at Home and Abroad: A Guide to Resources (1984), two reviews of South Asian women’s groups, one in the anthology, Making Waves: An anthology by and about Asian American Women (Beacon Press, 1989) and another in the AmerAsia Journal (2000), and a chapter, “Fair enough? Color and the commodification of self in Indian matrimonals,” in the forthcoming anthology, Shades of Difference: Why skin color matters (Stanford University Press).
· Dr. Vaid was founding editor of the Committee on South Asian Women Bulletin (1983-1994), an internationally circulated publication featuring essays, reports, interviews, and creative writing on and by South Asian women on issues of women's status, now archived at Texas A&M University. She was consulting editor for the Psychology of Women Quarterly and has served as an ad hoc reviewer for Signs, and Violence Against Women.
· She is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, a trustee of the American Institute for Indian Studies, a recipient of a Big XII Faculty Fellowship Award, and a former Fulbright research fellow. Dr. Vaid was recognized for her outstanding service to the Texas A&M University International Studies Degree Program in 2006-2007. She was keynote speaker at the 2004 World Englishes Conference and the 2004 International Conference on Cognitive Science and is an invited speaker at the 2008 European Science Foundation Experts Meeting of the European Social Cognition Network in Venice.
· Dr. Vaid is the recipient of several grants including a Humanities Informatics Project Seed Grant through the Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities Research, a conference grant from the American Psychological Association, and funding from the South Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies for special issues of the COSAW Bulletin.
