Assistant Professor, HistoryPh.D., History, Columbia University, 2004
Statement of Interest:
Leah DeVun focuses on gender, sex, and sexuality in premodern Europe, as well as the legacy of these concepts in the modern world. Her current project is Enter Sex: Science, Hermaphrodites, and the Demands of Difference, which examines the history of sex difference by looking at how scientists and physicians have conceived of biological sex -- particular through their approaches to intersex and transgender people -- in the past and present. She also writes about feminism and culture for a number of popular magazines, including Wired and Venus, and she appeared as a cultural commentator on the season three DVD of the Showtime television series "The L-Word."
