Claudia Nelson's areas of specialization are Victorian literature and culture, with particular emphasis on family, gender, and childhood, and children's literature.
She has also published work on American texts, particularly those of the nineteenth century. She serves as the consulting editor for Ashgate Publishing's book series “Studies in Childhood, 1700 to the Present,” which may be visited by clicking here
Co-edited three anthologies of critical articles, Sexual Pedagogies: Sex Education in Britain , Australia , and America , 1879-2000 (coedited with Michelle H. Martin; Palgrave, 2004), Maternal Instincts: Visions of Motherhood and Sexuality in Britain , 1875-1925 (coedited with Ann Sumner Holmes; Macmillan UK /St. Martin's, 1997), and The Girl's Own: Cultural Histories of the Anglo-American Girl, 1830-1915 (coedited with Lynne Vallone; Georgia, 1994)
Nelson is the author of four books, Family Ties in Victorian England (Praeger, 2007), Little Strangers: Portrayals of Adoption in America, 1850-1929 (Indiana, 2003), Invisible Men: Fatherhood in Victorian Periodicals, 1850-1910 (Georgia, 1995), and Boys Will Be Girls: The Feminine Ethic and British Children's Fiction, 1857-1917 (Rutgers, 1991).
Recent and upcoming graduate and undergraduate courses deal with Victorian literature, Victorian masculinities, the British novel since 1870, the novels by British women, children's literature, Victorian fantasy, and representations of motherhood in the U.S. and Britain since the mid-nineteenth century.
